As an industry dealing with medical applications, technologies, and services to ensure human health, the health care industry must ensure that its practices are in line with medical, legal, and ethical standards to avoid compromises on the part of the health care practitioners. Specifically in medical practice, dealing with human lives is a serious matter and thus, careful considerations must be made when a decision is required.
Although the medical practice is such an objective science, ethical issues are not. The current status of medical practice in the US is such that practitioners are confronted with a highly dynamic setting in which precedents must be reviewed from time to time in order to come up with decisions or solutions for each problem. A patient refusing treatment, a doctor choosing not to disclose full information to a client, or a family deciding for an incapable patient are just some of the examples wherein decisions need to be carefully evaluated. Let us take a look at two of the prevailing ethical issues in medical practice.
The Patient Bill of Right and the Right to Refuse/Accept Treatment Based on an Informed Decision
Adopted by the American Hospital Association or the AHA, the Patient Bill of Right states that a patient possesses the right to be informed of the medical consequences of his or her actions and decisions and refuse treatment to the extent permitted by the law. First, the concept of full disclosure has been advocated to ensure that the patient, as long as he or she is cognizant and capable of arriving at sound decisions, be accorded the power to decide on whether a medical option must be chosen. It is proper for practitioners to ensure that patients are provided all the necessary information to make a decision. For example, undergoing a gastric bypass surgery is risky so the patient must be informed of all possible consequences to ensure that his or her decision is an informed one.
The ethical issue here arises when the patient is deemed “incapable” of deciding for himself or herself which option is the best. This is true in cases wherein patients are senile, suffering from mental illnesses, or are comatose. Who gets to decide in such cases? Although patients are accorded the right to accept or refuse treatment, isn’t it true that doctors actually know better in terms of what could be the best decision for their patients? Such questions surround medical decisions resulting in a variety of ethical and moral considerations in coming up with a decision.
Physicians and the Pharmaceutical Companies-Patient vs. Business Interest
This is a classic dilemma pitting the notion of ensuring human health versus safeguarding the business interests of pharmaceutical companies. It is true that physicians and the pharmaceutical industry share a common interest in promoting medical knowledge; however, this common interest ends when the business interest of the pharmaceutical industry is factored in. Since a physician must operate under the principles of beneficence, non-malfeasance, and patient autonomy, they must, in the context of product promotion, ensure that these principles are upheld before considering the benefit of the pharmaceutical companies.

In fact ethical issues regarding alternative therapies should be thought about as merely just another piece of information to allow patients to make their mind up about the treatments. Any information, positive or negative, surrounding a treatment is a positive thing for the patient. Knowledge is always necessary when making decisions about treatments. Alternative therapies are often used instead of traditional treatments, but are also used frequently in combination with traditional treatments. Therefore, there is knowledge regarding the therapies, the use of the therapies, and how they can affect the traditional treatment.
Some of the existing ethical issues with alternative therapies exist specifically around the area of diet pills and supplements. The concerns about taking supplements of any kind are that they are not regulated like food and prescription drugs are. They can word things differently and market them differently.
However, equipped with this knowledge people seeking the use of a diet supplement or any herbal supplement are less likely to jump into taking something without doing the necessary added research. In addition, some of the treatments and therapists that administer the treatments are not governed or regulated by any national body. Therefore, qualifications are unknown or not met. With this information people can research the technique as well as the technician and can make a decision based upon the credentials that are found.
Ethical issues with alternative therapies definitely come into play when people involved closely with the traditional medical system, for instance a stay in the hospital, who want to use alternative therapies. Universal Health Care – Ethical Issues in Health Care Reform
Universal health care seems to be a hotly debated topic whenever health care reform in the United States is discussed.
Those who maintain that health is an individual responsibility do not want a system that requires them to contribute tax dollars to support fellow citizens who do not act responsibly in protecting or promoting their own health.
They argue that they want the freedom to choose their own physicians and treatments, and suggest that government cannot know what is best for them. These people argue that preserving the current system with improvements to provide better insurance coverage for citizens who remain uninsured or under insured for their medical care needs is the only reform that is needed.
Those who believe health care is an individual right support a universal health care system with the argument that every citizen deserves to have access to the right care at the right time and that a government’s responsibility is to protect its citizens, sometimes even from themselves.
Two opposing arguments arising from two opposing ideologies. Both are good arguments but neither can be the supporting argument for implementing or denying universal health care. The matter must be resolved through an ethical framework.
Examination of the ethical issues in health care reform would require consideration of much different arguments than those already presented. Ethical issues would center on the moral right. Discussion would begin with not “What is best for me?” but rather “How should we as a society be acting so that our actions are morally correct?”
Ethics refers to determining right and wrong in how humans relate to one another. Ethical decision making for health care reform then would require human beings to act in consideration of our relationships to each other not our own individual interests.
Examination of some of the common ethical decision making theories can provide a foundation for a different perspective than one that is solely concerned with individual rights and freedoms.
Ethical decision making requires that specific questions be answered in order to decide on whether intended actions are good or morally correct. Here are some questions that could be used in ethical decision making for health care reform.
What action will bring the most good to the most people? What action in and of itself is a good act and helps us to fulfill our duties, obligations, and responsibilities to each other? What action in and of itself shows caring and concern for all citizens?
As the answer to all these questions, universal health care can always be considered the right thing to do.
The United States is in the most advantageous position there is when it comes to health care reform. They are the only developed country without a national health care system in place for all citizens. They have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes that have been made by all the other countries that have already gone down the universal health care road. They have an opportunity to design a system that can shine as a jewel in the crown of universal health care systems everywhere.
However, all ethical decision making is structured around values. In order for universal health care to be embraced by all citizens in the United States, they will first have to agree to the collective value of equity and fairness and embrace the goal of meeting their collective responsibility to each other while maintaining individual rights and freedoms.
That may prove to be the most difficult obstacle of all.

Also, if you are remaining true to the policy of the company and you do not violate any civil law, then you are free to make that decision.
2) Is the decision fair for both parties involved?
Although both parties do not necessarily have to gain something out of the decision made on the workplace, it must produce an even result for either parties. By saying that, no one ends up aggravated by the decision made.
3) Will the decision bother you ethically?
This consideration is subjective; however, you need to produce a satisfactory answer to it in order to ensure that you have dealt with ethical issues inherent with workplace stress properly.

In applied ethics, questions that arise in fields such as the legal, technical, medical or business are dealt with. Ethical issues in business are dealt with in business ethics, which is a form of applied ethics. When there are any moral or ethical issues that are present in any business environment, these are examined thoroughly. Any business must have business ethics by applying ethical or moral values into their work through their conduct – the individuals’ who work in the business as well as that of the business organization.
There are several ethical issues in business that need to be addressed. Through the development of many laws and initiatives, these issues are able to be dealt with. There is a certain ethical code that individuals must follow when conducting any business. This ethical code covers any personal or corporate behavior when dealing with negotiations or with suppliers and customers. This also covers any behavior during the recruitment process.
There are also ethical issues which involve the business and the society. This covers issues that arise about the involvement of the business with the community, its donations to various causes, the using of animals in experiments and animal testing, its acceptance of responsibility for any mishaps related to the business, and honesty and fairness in marketing and advertising. Some examples of unethical practices that can occur in marketing and advertising include brand piracy and using counterfeit goods, imitating packaging or brand in order to mislead consumers, pricing that is unclear, issuing credit cards or credit limits irresponsibly, and using high pressure to sell goods.
Ethical issues regarding products and product selling that may arise include the selling of unsafe products, failing to include information on a product’s side effects, unnecessary packaging which can contribute to more waste, the selling of banned goods, deceiving advertising of the product’s contents and size, and animal testing on products.
When dealing with customers and with employees, there are also ethical issues in business that may arise. These include taking care of the working conditions of the employees, the behavioral treatment of employees, employment of individuals with disabilities, the proportion of the women or members of the ethnic minority who hold high positions in the business, its loyalty to its workers during times of economic crisis, using bribery when securing contracts, the use of child labor, and its customer treatment.
Businesses must be incredibly careful with its practices especially in the supply chain. There is a great possibility for ethical issues in business to arise when business production is done in sweatshops, there is a violation of basic human rights of the workers, use of forced labor, use of child labor, and if there is no consideration with the safety and health standards of the workers.
There must be an ethical audit being done for each business to ensure that all the ethical principles are pursued and to what extent this is being pursued. If not, the ethical auditing of a business must establish some courses of action to ensure that all ethical issues in business are being addressed.
