Environmental Issues – They Concern Chefs as Well!
It has not probably escaped your notice that environmental issues have captured peopleâs interest. You can probably say that this is not surprising considering the fact that people are finally experiencing the effects of decades of environmental abuse. Mother Nature is indeed lashing back. Environmental debates are fairly common these days. Being a chef does not excuse you, however, from getting involved. You create your own ecological footprints and you are accountable for them.
Environmental issues generally fall under three categories â bizarre global climate changes, excessive use of resources, improper waste management.
Bizarre Global Climate Changes
There are numerous environmental issues but the one thing that you have likely heard people talking about is the bizarre climate that the whole world is experiencing. The effects of these weird climate changes have caused devastating damages, taking lives and properties. Unfortunately, there are many factors that contribute to climate change. Many of these factors are largely created by man.
Excessive and Abusive Use of Environmental Resources
There are many environmental issues that fall under this category. You have deforestation, land degradation and land being stripped off of fossil fuels. These three are just some of the many problems that arise from abusive use of environmental resources.
Improper Waste Management
Many environmental issues have resulted from peopleâs inability to manage their waste or trash properly. This category basically embraces all kinds of pollutions caused by humans which include air, water and land pollution.
Resolving Environmental Issues Your Way
Itâs certainly a good thing that many people are getting involved in correcting environmental issues. As a chef, you can do a lot of things in order to reverse the damage that has been done to the environment. You can make positive contributions. Being environmentally friendly does not end with disposing potato peelings properly. As a leader, you can influence people to be more environmentally conscious.
Adopt an Environmental Cause
If you own your restaurant, you can get your staff or employees to volunteer for environmental causes. Since you are working in the food industry, perhaps you can get your employees to volunteer for a food feeding program.
You can also adopt environmental programs and support them. For instance, you can adopt a program which aims to provide clear water to many places in Africa or you can support one project that is designed to protect the rainforest in the Amazons. Support any environmental conservation schemes. Try to raise funds if you can in order to support a conservation program.
Recycle!
Another way of helping the environment is to adopt a recycling program in your workplace. You should also make sure that you get recyclable supplies. If you are going to purchase disposable dishware, you should get recyclable or biodegradable ones. Encourage your staff or employees to do the same.
Cut Back on Gas Consumption
There are also various ways of cutting back on gas consumption. You can also get your employees involved in your save-your-gas scheme. You can offer incentives to employees who choose to leave their cars at home. In fact, this method is proving effective among hospitality entrepreneurs. Aside from encouraging your staff to take the bus, you can also get them to set up a carpool system.
Another way of saving gas and cutting back on delivery expenses is to impose minimum order requirement. This will discourage small deliveries and unnecessary use of gas.
Prefer Local Producers
The food service industry has finally recognized that they have a social responsibility to support local producers within their community. If you choose to purchase products from local farmers, not only will you be able to help the local economy, you will also help in minimizing environmental wastages.
Spread the Word
You need to spread environmental consciousness. You can start with the people around you â your employees perhaps. Challenge people to care. Over time, you will eventually get people involved. Employ people who are environmentally conscious â people who purchase organic products and who boast of eco-friendly practices.
You can also train your staff and teach them how to be more eco-friendly. After all, you will reap the benefits as well. You will likely notice a considerable decrease in energy consumption once your staff learns how to conserve energy.
You can also spread the word and influence your guests, customers and clients. You can offer rewards or incentives to guests who adopt eco-friendly measures in order to address environmental issues. You donât have to stop with your employees. Ideally, the more people you educate, the better it will be for the environment.

Question by Witchy: How is your congressman going to vote on the cap and trade bill today?
Do you agree with his/her views?
My congressman is John Boehner (who is also the house minority leader) and he is going to vote No. I agree with his decision.
How is your congressman going to vote?
Best answer:
Answer by Bob
Mine will most likely vote yes, to my ultimate dismay.
I am watching your John Boehner right now debate this bill. He is doing a fantastic job breaking it down. And the best part, he is doing it with the democrats favorite weapon, filibuster. And when the little weasel Waxman tried to break the rules and stop him, Nancy Pelosi of all people shot him down and let Boehner keep going. He is still on a roll and may be our best hope

Prevailing Ethical Issues In Medical Practice
As an industry dealing with medical applications, technologies, and services to ensure human health, the health care industry must ensure that its practices are in line with medical, legal, and ethical standards to avoid compromises on the part of the health care practitioners. Specifically in medical practice, dealing with human lives is a serious matter and thus, careful considerations must be made when a decision is required.
Although the medical practice is such an objective science, ethical issues are not. The current status of medical practice in the US is such that practitioners are confronted with a highly dynamic setting in which precedents must be reviewed from time to time in order to come up with decisions or solutions for each problem. A patient refusing treatment, a doctor choosing not to disclose full information to a client, or a family deciding for an incapable patient are just some of the examples wherein decisions need to be carefully evaluated. Let us take a look at two of the prevailing ethical issues in medical practice.
The Patient Bill of Right and the Right to Refuse/Accept Treatment Based on an Informed Decision
Adopted by the American Hospital Association or the AHA, the Patient Bill of Right states that a patient possesses the right to be informed of the medical consequences of his or her actions and decisions and refuse treatment to the extent permitted by the law. First, the concept of full disclosure has been advocated to ensure that the patient, as long as he or she is cognizant and capable of arriving at sound decisions, be accorded the power to decide on whether a medical option must be chosen. It is proper for practitioners to ensure that patients are provided all the necessary information to make a decision. For example, undergoing a gastric bypass surgery is risky so the patient must be informed of all possible consequences to ensure that his or her decision is an informed one.
The ethical issue here arises when the patient is deemed “incapable” of deciding for himself or herself which option is the best. This is true in cases wherein patients are senile, suffering from mental illnesses, or are comatose. Who gets to decide in such cases? Although patients are accorded the right to accept or refuse treatment, isn’t it true that doctors actually know better in terms of what could be the best decision for their patients? Such questions surround medical decisions resulting in a variety of ethical and moral considerations in coming up with a decision.
Physicians and the Pharmaceutical Companies-Patient vs. Business Interest
This is a classic dilemma pitting the notion of ensuring human health versus safeguarding the business interests of pharmaceutical companies. It is true that physicians and the pharmaceutical industry share a common interest in promoting medical knowledge; however, this common interest ends when the business interest of the pharmaceutical industry is factored in. Since a physician must operate under the principles of beneficence, non-malfeasance, and patient autonomy, they must, in the context of product promotion, ensure that these principles are upheld before considering the benefit of the pharmaceutical companies.

The Facts Regarding Ethical Issues with Alternative Therapies
No matter what the ailment, condition, or disease, every patient has the right to choice regarding the treatment, even if this means not taking treatment that could be life saving. There are always concerns with having any treatment or taking any medications. Ethical issues with alternative therapies do not necessarily have to be looked at in a negative way.
In fact ethical issues regarding alternative therapies should be thought about as merely just another piece of information to allow patients to make their mind up about the treatments. Any information, positive or negative, surrounding a treatment is a positive thing for the patient. Knowledge is always necessary when making decisions about treatments. Alternative therapies are often used instead of traditional treatments, but are also used frequently in combination with traditional treatments. Therefore, there is knowledge regarding the therapies, the use of the therapies, and how they can affect the traditional treatment.
Some of the existing ethical issues with alternative therapies exist specifically around the area of diet pills and supplements. The concerns about taking supplements of any kind are that they are not regulated like food and prescription drugs are. They can word things differently and market them differently.
However, equipped with this knowledge people seeking the use of a diet supplement or any herbal supplement are less likely to jump into taking something without doing the necessary added research. In addition, some of the treatments and therapists that administer the treatments are not governed or regulated by any national body. Therefore, qualifications are unknown or not met. With this information people can research the technique as well as the technician and can make a decision based upon the credentials that are found.
Ethical issues with alternative therapies definitely come into play when people involved closely with the traditional medical system, for instance a stay in the hospital, who want to use alternative therapies. The nurses, nursing aids, as well as the other medical staff, have to be aware of the interactions between the two types of medical treatment.
Therefore, the knowledge regarding the ethical issues with alternative therapies as well as the benefits and consequences need to be known by the patient and medical professionals. Ethical issues with alternative therapies are just another tool for people to equip themselves with before making a decision about their health and the treatment. Alternative therapies are often an excellent way to gain some relief from a condition or illness when there is the possibility of religious or other belief system values preventing traditional medical treatments.
